Based across three sites – Cardiff, Llandough and Barry – the immensely complicated scope of works involved more than 40 buildings, including a 1,080-bed teaching hospital. Savings achieved were £1 million plus per year, based on 25p per KWh. Further phases for other buildings in the portfolio are planned

An eclectic mix of buildings was involved when this local government authority embarked on an Energy Performance Contract. When it came to the LED refit, 4Ward Energy had to design and install lighting for everything from an ice-skating arena to a library, a swimming pool to an art gallery, and corporate spaces to carparks
Project
- Challenges included a ‘Sports England’ lighting solution ‘over the ice’ for the ice-skating arena, which 4Ward Energy designed, manufactured and installed. Other areas in the building included specialist seating lighting, changing rooms, offices, and corporate space
- The central library building, comprising several departments offering a range of services, resources, information and support. As well as regular activities for children, the library regularly hosts author visits, reading groups and digital support surgeries. The LED refit of the entire building had to include reading areas, meeting rooms, all public spaces and back-of-house
- Sports centre, comprising swimming pool and fitness rooms, plus gym, changing rooms and back-of-house
- Art gallery and museum. This Gothic Revival-style building, located in the centre of town, has protected Category A status and so required specialist treatment by 4Ward Energy. It houses a collection of fine and decorative art, as well as a natural history collection. The LED refit was required in all specialist areas, including cabinet, artifact, and atrium lighting, together with all back-of-house

- Built in the early 1990s, the building provided 92,344 sq ft of quality office accommodation over two-and-a-half floors
- As the existing lighting system supported the ceiling grid, the client was faced with the added cost and disruption of replacing entire ceilings, as well as the energy-saving upgrades, or a specially designed LED solution that could be integrated and solve the problem
- As well as being contemporary, the solution had to include the benefits of an energy-reduction programme
- Design, manufacture and installation of LED lighting required
